My internship experience at CoastTv News was an incredible opportunity that helped me develop a wide range of skills in software usage, production techniques, and broadcast television processes. This essay reflects on the specific skills I practiced, the research and learning involved, advice for future interns, the effectiveness of my Communications program, my career aspirations, and overall reflections on my internship experience. During my internship, I learned a lot, especially in using various software, understanding production techniques, and getting a feel for the news and broadcast television industry. A significant part of my role involved working with Adobe Creative Suite. I became fluent in using Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing. During my internship, I observed firsthand how the news station effectively utilized Adobe Premiere Pro to enhance its video production process. This powerful software played a crucial role in the daily operations of the newsroom, enabling the team to deliver high-quality content efficiently. I also had the chance to use ENPS (Essential News Production System), which was crucial for organizing news stories, managing rundowns, and coordinating with the production team. This software streamlined our workflow and kept everyone on the same page. I was involved in scriptwriting, researching, and planning shoots in the pre-production phase. These tasks required both creative thinking and logistical planning. On set, I gained hands-on experience operating cameras, setting up lighting, and managing audio equipment. I also learned about directing and coordinating with the public alongside coworkers to ensure smooth production. This part of the job was the most exciting as it required real-time problem-solving and adaptability. You also had to have great communication skills and the ability to talk to many different personalities. In post-production, I edited footage, wrote articles, and mixed audio. This phase required a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of narrative structure to produce cohesive and engaging segments. Bringing all the elements together into a polished final product was immensely satisfying and my favorite part of the job. Participating in live broadcasts taught me the importance of quick decision-making and problem-solving. I learned to handle unexpected technical issues and ensure smooth transitions during live segments. This experience was invaluable in teaching me how to stay calm under pressure. I was also involved in researching, writing, and producing news segments. This involved fact-checking, conducting interviews, and crafting compelling stories that adhered to journalistic standards. The most gratifying part was seeing my work contribute to the final broadcast and inform the public. Throughout my internship, I often had to recall what I learned in school and conducted research to prepare and further enhance my skills. When faced with technical challenges related to software or equipment, I turned to online forums, tutorials, and coworkers. Everyone at the station was so kind and patient and supported me along the way. These resources were crucial in helping me overcome technical hurdles and improve my workflow. To ensure my work met professional standards I researched industry best practices for video production, news reporting, and graphic design. This included studying guidelines from reputable organizations like the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). Understanding these standards helped me produce high-quality work that met industry expectations. One of the most impactful aspects of my internship was experiencing life-changing stories. From covering local events to interviewing inspiring individuals, I encountered narratives that broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for journalism. These stories not only enriched my professional experience but also had a profound personal impact on me. I also picked up numerous tips and tricks along the way. For example, I learned more efficient ways to organize my editing workflow, significantly speeding up my production time. Small but valuable tips from experienced colleagues, like adjusting the lighting for different skin tones or certain shortcut keys that save you time and eye strain. These insights, though sometimes simple, made a huge difference in the quality of my work. One of the best parts of my internship was the friendships I made. Working closely with my team allowed us to bond over shared challenges and triumphs. These relationships were a source of support, both professionally and personally. The partnerships developed made the work environment enjoyable and enriched my internship experience. I know these friendships will last beyond the internship, and the memories we created together are ones I will cherish forever. To future interns at CoastTV, I offer the following advice. Be proactive in learning new skills and seeking out resources. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek guidance from experienced colleagues. The more you comprehend the more valuable you become to the team. Effective time management and organizational skills are crucial. Keep detailed notes, maintain a calendar, and stay on top of deadlines to ensure smooth workflow. Organizational skills help in managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines efficiently. Be prepared to adapt to changes and handle unexpected situations, especially in a live broadcast or interview environment. Flexibility and a calm demeanor will serve you well. Being adaptable allows handling challenges with ease and creative solutions to problems. Collaborate with colleagues, and build relationships within the industry. These connections can provide support, mentorship, and potential job opportunities in the future. Building a strong professional network can open new doors to opportunities and career advancements. The Communications program provided a solid foundation for my internship, particularly in the following areas. The program offered a broad overview of different roles within the media industry, including editing, reporting, videography, and graphic design. This exposure helped me understand the intensive responsibilities and skills required for each position. The comprehensive nature of the program ensured that I was well-prepared for various tasks during my internship. The program familiarized me with the terminology and jargon used in the media industry, which was beneficial in communicating effectively and understanding industry literature. This knowledge was useful in navigating professional conversations and understanding technical documentation. The coursework included training in the Adobe Suite and other relevant software, which gave me a head start in using these tools during my internship. However, hands-on experience during the internship significantly enhanced my proficiency. The practical application of these tools in a real-world setting helped solidify my skills. I have also faced my fears of social anxiety and public speaking and have developed better communication skills. Reflecting on my internship experience, I have a clearer vision of my career goals. After completing my associate’s degree, I aspire to pursue a career in media production, specifically focusing on video editing and motion graphics. I am drawn to the creative aspects of these roles and the opportunity to craft engaging visual stories. I am also considering the benefits of working remotely versus on-site. Remote work offers flexibility which is important to me as a twin mother and the possibility to collaborate with diverse teams worldwide. However, on-site work provides hands-on experience and direct mentorship and networking. Ideally, I would seek a position that offers a hybrid model, allowing for both remote and in-person collaboration. I value a collaborative and supportive environment where creativity is encouraged, and professional growth is fostered. I’m seeking an organization that prioritizes innovation and provides continuous learning and development. Working in such an environment would allow me to thrive and continuously improve my skills. Coast TV fulfills all of these aspects. Overall, my internship was an enriching and transformative experience. It allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, develop practical skills, and gain insights into the media industry. I am forever grateful for the opportunity and feel more confident and prepared for my future career. The experience has solidified my passion for media production and has set a clear path for my professional journey.
